Officers Reports
Jack
- East Midlands Regional Conference happening at DMU, Sat 28th 2012, would be great if people could attend. To do so they need to email Nicola_heaton@Labour.org.uk
- More speakers needed for this term – explained difficulties of getting current Shadow Cabinet members. Mentioned that one former Labour cabinet member has agreed to come and speak this term.
- Michael Rubin (Chair of University of Leicester Labour Students) plans to hold a “Ladies in Red” day as a joint event around national Women’s Day. Agreed that Tamsira (Equalities officer) would get in touch with them.
- Might be a good idea to organize a fundraiser, and if so, we will need to find a speaker.
Grant
- Feedback from Fabian conference that he attended last Saturday (14th January). Interesting speeches. Heard Ed Balls’ keynote. Not other business to feedback on.
Tamsira
- Reporting back on possible John Mcdonnell visit; this no longer looks likely. Andrew Smith Vice chair LRC, has expressed an interest in holding a speaking event with us. International Woman’s day 8th march 2012 – need to organize an event. Possible speaker?
Agenda
Upcoming events:
- Jan 12th – Andy Burnham’s “drop the bill” rally @ BRITE Centre. 4pm – Meeting point SU @ 3pm
- Jan 20th – John Ashworth surgery @ lounge in SU 12-1pm – need some of our members there to keep Jon Company. Not a party political event, just a chance for students to meet MP NB Jon has always supported us, and promised he would be on campus, which he has been.
- Sat 28th Jan – East Midlands Young Labour conference @ DMU
- Feb 3rd – Lord Waheed Ali – chancellor of DMU and Labour peer is coming to speak. This will probably be a strategic partnerships event and is not organized by DMU Labour, but as a Labour Lord, we will help to advertise it on our own social networks.
- Feb 9th CLP Meeting Leicester South AGM – clash with Liz Kendall Social- however some attendees would be good as elections coming up. Members of Leicester south need to be there if possible as votes would help.
- Feb 9th – Social with Liz Kendal 7pm – meet and greet set up – Semi formal social. Not going to do a speech, just coming round and chatting.– need to organize advertising. Joint event with UOL.
- 25h/26th Feb National Labour Students Conference in Manchester. Delegates needed – 1 male & 1 female. Need to elect delegates – we will do this in 2 weeks time. Those who want to stand contact Rob or email dmulabour@gmail.com Those who want to attend but not as delegates can attend as observer. NB no money for tickets so those going will have to finance it themselves – tickets including accommodation are around £45 (£25 without accom.)
- It was agreed that our AGM would be on Weds 14th March. Attendance needs to be high, if possible, to have fair elections. All executive positions up for election. Those who wish to stand for election – contact executive by 28th Feb 2012
- Still need to think of more events and campaigns, all ideas welcome.
All Other Business
- Jack has been contacted by a number of Labour Students hoping for nomination for the new National Committee (being elected at conference in February). We agreed that we would wait until all manifestos are received and then decide who we should nominate as a club.
- Michael mentioned Leicester City Council’s Budget consultation. He reminded us all to get involved in the process on the council website
- A Leicestershire Young Labour Rep will be elected at their conference on 28th January. If people are interested in standing they need to email Nicola_heaton@labour.org.uk ASAP (before 25th January)
No other business – meeting ended with debate.
Next Meeting 1st February 5.15pm HU1.82
